What is an MRI?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): MRI is a computer-based cross sectional imaging modality. However the principles are different from CT and X-rays in that no ionizing radiation is employed during the examination. Instead, MRI creates images of structures through the interaction of magnetic fields and radio waves with tissues. Prior to the examination you will be asked to fill out a patient screening questionnaire to identify any potential risks or contraindications before entering the magnetic environment. Once cleared to enter the exam room, the procedure will take an average of 30 minutes. You can help to produce high quality images by lying still throughout the exam, during which dozens of images will be created. The magnet being used for your test specializes in producing high quality exams.

Preparation For MRI Examination:

• Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time
• Wear something comfortable (Sweat suit) that does not have metal snaps, zippers, or buttons
• Please bring your insurance cards, photo ID, and other important personal information
• All MRI patients who are allergic to Gadolinium must contact their doctor for a steroid prep or contrast cannot be administered
• All patients over the age of 60 years old will need to have a blood test (BUN & Creatinine) to check kidney function to ensure IV contrast can be administered if one has not been obtained within the last three months
• All Abdominal studies must be NPO for 3 hours
